PUTTING F-PACE TO THE TEST

We’ve tested F‑PACE to its limits. It’s travelled to the 40°C Dubai desert and endured -20°C in Sweden – but now, we’re seeing how it performs in the wilds of Wales at our Brecon Beacons test facility. This is your behind the scenes look at F‑PACE all-road testing, where we put its performance to the test in unpredictable, real-world conditions.

WHY DO WE TEST AT OUR ALL-ROAD FACILITY?

It’s the ultimate in versatility. It can emulate the conditions of the Australian outback, melting snow in Russia, remote tracks in the Scottish highlands and more, so this is where every new Jaguar is put through its paces. This helps us to make sure F-PACE can deliver a safe, enjoyable drive, no matter where your journey takes you. When we say F-PACE will perform on all roads and surfaces, we really mean it.

You never know what conditions you’ll encounter on a daily basis, and so our test facility is completely un-manicured, uncontrolled, and as nature intends. So, even when you’re surprised at the conditions, F‑PACE isn’t. We make sure its technology works in unison and in response to real-world demands. We find the limits of F‑PACE – and refine them with every driver in mind.

WHAT KIND OF CONDITIONS DOES F‑PACE ENCOUNTER?

Put simply, everything that nature throws at us. Often, it’ll be mud and pine-needle-punctuated surfaces with the equivalent grip of polished ice. Or we’ll be tackling rutted, rocky inclines that have helped us to fine-tune F‑PACE’s class-leading, 213mm ground clearance. As a performance SUV, F‑PACE also devours the gravel-coated straights and hairpin bends.

All of these conditions come together into the perfect testing environment for the whole car. This means that when you decide to take a more demanding route home, F‑PACE will have seen the conditions before – and it will respond to give you a safe and assuredly confident drive.

WHAT KIND OF TECHNOLOGIES DO WE TEST HERE?

We put the entire car through its paces; including the powertrain and braking systems, Adaptive Dynamics, Traction Control, Roll Stability Control, its ground clearance, geometry, and the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system. We’ve engineered F‑PACE’s torque on demand AWD system to deliver a responsive drive on surfaces. It balances power automatically between the front and rear wheels, and seamlessly blends between the two.

On a low grip surface – ice, snow, mud – AWD sends more torque to the front wheels. But when grip returns, it sends torque back to the rear wheels for sports car performance. It only takes 165 milliseconds for F‑PACE to seamlessly switch from 90% torque on the rear to 90% on the front. This gives you the best of both worlds – AWD confidence when you need it, and rear wheel drive agility when conditions are clear.

We also fine-tune our driver assistance technologies to ensure you’re taken care of in the worst of conditions. This includes Adaptive Surface Response, All Surface Progress Control, and Low Friction Launch. These are all specifically engineered to reduce driver load in tricky conditions, such as snow, ice, mud and wet grass.

WHAT’S THE RESULT?

Our ultimate goal is to take the stress out of driving in all conditions, and on all roads. This doesn’t just mean on motorways and B-roads, it means more than that. When you have to park in an overflow car park on wet grass, you can be confident you won’t get stuck in the mud. When your route takes you onto farm tracks instead of tarmac roads, you know you’re in safe hands. And, when you want to explore more, you can take the road less travelled without worry.

When conditions change, you can have confidence too. You’ll be able to take that icy driveway, that flooded river crossing, and that muddy slope in your stride.

There are no compromises, so whatever the conditions, whatever the weather, you can have confidence. Thanks to our all-road testing regime, we’ve balanced F‑PACE’s performance to deliver.
